it doesn't matter if you have a 64-bit processor and OS, you have to have 4Gb of RAM to run in 64-bit.

hahaha hilarious :D Stop you're killing me.

Bogus story because Apple would never fit graphics cards capable of outputting at that res in the iMacs or laptops. Plus I don't think any single monitor can have that resolution that you can buy today?

    Do you understand technology?

    HiDPI?

    DPI = Dots per inch
    PPI = Pixels per inch.

DPI is an acronym that mainly applies to the printing industry. No, your brand-shiny new ACD (seems more like BC-ACD) does not display dots. Pixels are, in fact, squares (rectangles, if you really wanna nitpick).

HiPPI is what it should be.

Is this going be another typeface/font mass misunderstanding turned commonplace?

THERE ARE NO DOTS ON YOUR SCREEN! ONLY PIXELS!

Freakin' idiots. What would your mothers say?

I am happy for this, this means when my upgrade happens, iPhone 6 will be a HUGE one :-)

Yeah Exaclty i was hoping that my iPhone4 wasn't going to become obsolete after only a few months of being on a 24 month contract! Apples good, but they do like to make my products feel slow and old :(
Damn their marketing and business sense!

While I do enjoy downloading apps from the app store since I get the immediacy of not having to drive to the mall, find a parking space, go to the Apple store and then having to drive back home, I do not like the idea of downloading an entire OS over the Internet. The size of the file would mean several hours waiting.

I rather just have a DVD that I can reuse if something goes wrong.

I would hazard a guess that the thinner facade suggests a lack of optical media drives, or if it does have one, a vertical slot-loader. But I think what with flash drive or Internet distribution, optical media drives aren't really needed any more, even on a Pro machine.

If they made the MacBook Air External Superdrive bootable and compatible with any computer I would welcome the elimination of internal optical drives.

can anyone comment on the sound quality when playing music on the iphone via the tomtom kit when it's connected to the car's sound system?

reason for asking: when i use a standard audio cable from the headphone output of my iphone into my car's aux in, the sound quality leaves a lot to be desired. i basically have to crank up the volume all the way on both my car system and the iphone to hear anything, and even what i hear isn't all that great.

The sound quality of the Car Kit going through the aux jack is excellent. Much better than coming from the headphone jack.

I've been holding off on the smart phone thing until Apple comes up with something that makes sense. I've tried palm and windows mobile phones and both are so clunky. I'm sure I could reasonably learn their quirks and incorporate them into my life, but I don't want to. I just want it to do what it's supposed to and get out of my way, just like my macs and my ipod. The "solutions" out there now force you to do it their way.

one problem, that will never happen...

Nor, methinks this iPhone shall ever happen. What would Apple gain in becoming a cell phone provider? Its a nasty market with no concensus between camps.

    Sorry, its vaporware.

.... Most other countries enacted policy through a quiet parliamentary action that was later carried out by agencies or at a time when most people weren't active in politics. ...

In the US there are a lot of veto points in the legislative process, making any significant change hard to do. ... why should they care about a measurement system when the one they are using right now is working for them?
    ...
Any realistic transition for the US would take decades.

This, I believe, captures the situation really well. Inertia, coupled with a fairly de-centralized government (at least as far as this issue is concerned). And a population that is fairly resistant to change, in many areas.

Another example is the move to a $1 coin. How many times and for how long has the US been trying to introduce this coin? Every study done shows it will save taxpayers money. Still no-go. In Canada we had no choice. The $1 coin was introduced, then the banks were told to hand out only the coins, and to start sending back to Ottawa any $1 bills that their customers were depositing. Within a few years we were a $1 bill free country. Then they removed the $2 bills. These bills are still legal, there just isn't any of them circulating. And if a bank gets one, they don't put it back into circulation. Done.

    This better not happen. Seriously.
    Or else what?

Several things. Apple's stock growth will slow, and the price will take a hit. Big deal? Maybe, maybe not. But I can tell you definitively that there is a large amount of padding in the price based on Apple keeping up with it's own defined yearly cycle. The successive cycle that has stayed strict through every iPhone, iPod, iPad, and iOS launch for 5 years has created a pattern that Apple must stick to, or risk losing ground in the mind of investors.

No one ever expected/demanded Apple to go to a yearly cycle for such advanced refreshes, but they're the ones who chose to do it. If they now begin to fall behind, the growth they've seen WILL suffer, no ifs ands or buts about it.

No one forces you now. I was talking in terms of future limitations. I was also speaking in the abstract, meaning any company to offer a service of this nature will "probably" impose some sort of restrictions to gouge money from the consumer. Again, speaking in future terms. Otherwise, what is the point of building some grand service if it has no advantage economically? Companies are out to make money.

it's a freemium service meant to make some people pay for extra storage and to buy music from amazon rather than itunes

How would one do a "complete fresh reinstall" by this method? Or will we be able to burn to a disc/USB key?

I would hope that creating a bootable DVD/flash drive would be part of the installation process.

How is it handled now for developers with the Lion preview?

As Rosius forced the gargantuan double doors open, the ground rumbled with the weight of the doors scraping the floor.

Before the group is a huge entrance, the far walls barely perceptible in the darkness. "We go in," Rosius stated once again as he led the way into the mansion.

The moment the last foot left the earthy ground and settled on the marble floor, the gargantuan doors screamed and slammed shut behind the group. Only Rosius was unfazed, shouting "it matters not! We are not leaving without the Artifact!"

Lamps suddenly lit up around the room, the flames waving gently in the wind that came from the outside and trapped.

    "YOU DARE ENTER MY DOMAIN!"

The booming voice shook the floor. Again, only Rosius was unfazed. "I have come to slay you! Your evil will be short-lived!" shouted the Wizard.

Only laughter replied the Wizard's words, booming around the room, coming from everywhere and nowhere at once.

    ***

The heroes explores the room. The Entrance is a huge room with columns at each sides leading to several stairs at the far end of the room. There seems to have been a throne upon the top of the stairs, but nothing is there. Instead, something is glowing on the floor near the leftmost edge of the platform.

YOU HAVE FOUND A HEALING TREASURE. IT HAS NO EFFECT.

YOU MOVE THROUGH THE TOP RIGHT DOOR INTO A HALLWAY.

    ROUND OVER.

yep. and he knows where all the treasures are so he can protect them with his minions.

the worst part is that we don't know if and how many points he had at the beginning, and/or if any monster or trap was pre-placed in the mansion. Nor we know the 'price-list" and stats of monsters and trap (all of which i think we should)

the good part is that the villain is dumb as a bell so he probably placed all the traps and monsters to guard his barbie-doll collection ;)

beatrice, that part is outdated and has been superseded by a more updated interpretation of how traps work. i think post 47 is a more current version of the rules.

so, where do you want to go?

Ahh, ok. I'm only really trying to check back with the OP to avoid further confusion. And yes, to the door at the end of the hallway.

And goodness, Beatrice makes me feel like I'm 100 years old.

I agree, nuckinfutz. I signed up for the old, free, iTools during Steve's MWSF 2000 keynote (and got a great email address.) Basic services could easily be made free again, advanced services could cost a little. Apple makes most of their money from hardware sales, so it's possible that the free MobileMe component could add enough value to generate more hardware sales for Apple.

Even if the extra initial cost to Apple outweighs the increase in hardware sales, it could be beneficial for Apple in the medium to long term. Because there's another potentially huge long-term benefit for Apple. If all or nearly all Apple customers join MobileMe, they will create a larger MobileMe market to sell into. By 'sell' I mean iAds. It's entirely possible that MobileMe could become completely free if you and I and other users are willing to put up with the fancy new iAds that Apple is working on.

So what would make us put up with the iAds? Great content. We could stream movies, TV, and even audio when we're away from our Macs. Apple may not want to go 100% "cloud" since the "cloud" may never be 100% reliable. Apple no doubt wants to avoid the kind of disaster that Microsoft / Danger users experienced if at all possible.

But if Apple does a few more deals in Hollywood, I wouldn't be surprised if MobileMe gets renamed to "The Apple Channel" or something like that. As internet media streaming becomes more popular, Apple will be able to use its MobileMe infrastructure to become even more of a media powerhouse. iAd commercials and all.

I wish all software was handled through a single entry point, like the App Store. That way updates are handled through it, instead of a series of unrelated and often annoying separate updaters. Never understood why this wasn't more of a priority 5+ years ago, even.

If Apple cannot beat them....they sue them. Why not, as in this case, do both?

Apple can beat them in the market; they can beat them in the courtroom.

He's talking about parts of the UI that have been taken from iOS. This is the worst example so far: http://forums.macrumors.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=278968&d=1301532493

It's clearly a "form over function" fail as the words are hard to read in the buttons. At least on the iPad, they had the decency to provide some contrast by making the letters white. It's horrible looking!

Then again, it's a developer preview. But I realllly hope stuff like that doesn't stick around. It's like the translucent menu bar introduced in 10.5 which everyone complained about that didn't get fixed until 10.5.2.
No, if he was talking about UI parts then he wouldn't have started to complain literally one line under about certain features in Lion.
